Earlier this month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) released Guiding Principles of Good AI Practice in Drug Development, a landmark document that reflects how seriously regulators now view the role of AI across the drug development lifecycle.
This guidance is notable not just for what it says, but for how it frames AI. It is not a black box innovation that should be feared or over-restricted, but rather, a powerful system-level capability that must be designed, governed, and operationalized with rigor, transparency, and accountability.
From my perspective, this marks an important inflection point for our industry.
The guidance explicitly acknowledges that AI is already being used across non-clinical, clinical, manufacturing, and post-marketing phases of drug development. That’s an important shift. The question is no longer whether AI belongs in drug development, but how it is implemented responsibly and at scale.

These principles closely mirror how high-performing clinical teams already think about quality, safety, and GxP compliance. In other words, regulators are not asking for something entirely new. They are asking for AI to meet the same standards we expect of any critical system supporting patient safety and decision-making.
